Sue McKinney
Dog Behavior Specialist & Retired Founder of Whole Dog Institute
Sue McKinney brings a unique blend of expertise in social work and professional dog training to her work with families and their canine companions. As the founder of the Whole Dog Institute in 2008, Sue has spent years helping people build stronger, more harmonious relationships with their dogs by focusing on what she calls the “human side of the partnership.”
Drawing on her Master’s in Social Work, Sue specializes in teaching dog owners how to understand their dogs' behavior and communicate effectively. Her lively, engaging lectures and hands-on exercises make training both fun and insightful. By uncovering the “why” behind a dog’s actions, Sue empowers families to appreciate their furry friends on a deeper level.
Sue has guided hundreds of families through the joys and challenges of bringing a dog into the home, with a special focus on child safety. She’s passionate about helping expectant parents and families with young children navigate the dynamics of having both kids and dogs under one roof.
At home, Sue is surrounded by her own lively pack of four dogs: a Tibetan Terrier, a Pudelpointer, a Border-Aussie, and a young English Cocker Spaniel. When she’s not working with dogs, you’ll find Sue in her garden or creating improvisational art quilts in her studio, where her creativity truly shines.
Fun Fact: Sue’s mission has always been about more than just training—it’s about fostering mutual respect and understanding between dogs and the people who love them.
