What to Learn, and When

You don't have to learn everything before your due date. Spreading it out makes it easier to remember — and easier on your energy.

First trimester

Build your team and your questions

  • Choose a provider and get to know how your practice works
  • Start a running list of questions for each appointment
  • Learn the common pregnancy terms you'll hear

Second trimester · around 20 weeks

Start childbirth education

  • Many parents start a childbirth class around 20 weeks, while there's time to learn gradually
  • Learn the stages of labor, comfort measures, and pain relief options
  • Bring your partner in — it's easier to prepare together than to catch them up later

Third trimester

Get ready for birth day and the first weeks

  • Write your birth plan and review it with your provider
  • Practice labor positions with your partner
  • Learn newborn basics, feeding, safe sleep, and infant safety and CPR
  • Plan for postpartum recovery and who will help at home

After baby arrives

Learn as real questions come up

  • Feeding, newborn sleep, and growth
  • Your own recovery and well-being
  • Milestones, starting solids, and the rest of the first year

Due soon? It's not too late. Start with the most time-sensitive topics — childbirth, recovery, newborn care, feeding, and safe sleep — and come back for the rest later.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I start a childbirth class?

Many parents start during the second trimester, around 20 weeks, when there's still time to learn gradually and revisit important topics closer to the due date. If you're further along, it's not too late — start with the most time-sensitive topics first.

Are online childbirth classes as good as in-person classes?

They can be, especially when they're expert-led and let you ask questions. Online classes let you learn at your own pace, rewatch lessons, and include a partner on their own schedule. See Online vs. In-Person Childbirth Classes for a side-by-side look.

Can my partner take the class with me?

Yes. Partner access is included with our programs, and partners can watch with you or on their own schedule.

Does insurance or an HSA/FSA cover parenting classes?

Sometimes. Eligible purchases may be reimbursable through an HSA or FSA, and some insurance plans reimburse childbirth education. Our guide Does Insurance Cover Childbirth Classes? walks you through it.
